The Rimfya Email will be a semi-regular mind-dump of ideas and thoughts, along with some useful tips and whatever else I deem to be worthy content.

As you can also tell by the first-person tone, it's a semi-personal email and not intended to be a medium solely to shill products and services.

Enjoy, all feedback is appreciated!

On Gourmet Burgers and Chips

Main Content Inline Small

As you're all aware from recent bulk-emailing, we took a little driving holiday recently.

One interesting day in Milton, we stopped to get some lunch which took a turn that got me thinking.

We ordered burgers and I asked if I could get a side of chips. This request was hastily responded to with: 'We don't sell chips, and these are gourmet burgers, by the way'.

This troubled me. Doesn't everyone like chips? Isn't every Australian entitled to a side of chips? Or was I from some lower form of society where I could not appreciate the complexity of a gourmet burger?

Then it got me thinking about business.

As business owners we would probably like to believe we're providing the best possible service for our clients. While our 'lesser competitors' might be serving up cheeseburgers and chips, we're selling marinated lamb with yogurt in Turkish bread. But perhaps there are times when a client simply wants a side of chips. Should we be catering to all kinds?

The flip side to this was that this gourmet burger was possibly one of the best things I have ever eaten. Ever. Chips were a long forgotten disappointment by the time I was finished.

So perhaps the real lesson here is not to give in to the cheeseburger crowd, but keep serving those gourmet burgers because there will always be those who appreciate quality.

Or perhaps I was just thinking too much at lunch.

Each edition of the newsletter we'll look at a different element of type, out of general interest or to help write better copy in future.

I'll start off with my biggest gripe; misuse of the ampersand.

This is an ampersand: &, shift+7 on your keyboard. Ampersands are used when stating some organisational names, titles, or authors in lists.

Example: Williams & Mayweather, GH&B Incorporated.

It should never be used to replace the word 'and' in a sentence.

Okay, so maybe I'll shill just a little in this email.

We're so close to Christmas, so keep in mind if you're looking to get cards, posters, vouchers or any other kind of printed promotional material done before Christmas you need to get it sorted as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.
